Dr. Ibrahim Salama

  Associate Director of the Observatory  

Dr. Ibrahim Salama is the Associate Director of the Human Rights Observatory at the UN, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law at the British University in Egypt, and a leading force in the field of human rights.

Dr. Salama previously served as Chief of the Human Rights Treaties Branch at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, where he also led the “Faith for Rights” programme and headed the United Nations Secretariat for the 2009 Durban Review Conference against Racism. Throughout his distinguished career, he has held several influential positions, including Independent Expert of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Right to Development.

In 2019, Dr. Salama conducted research at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights on the role of religious actors in advancing human rights. This work led to the development of a training tool and the co-authorship of the book Reconciling Religion and Human Rights alongside Michael Wiener.

Dr. Salama’s career and contributions continue to shape the global human rights landscape, combining deep expertise with a longstanding commitment to faith, dialogue, and multilateralism.
