Cindy Li
Leader at the Observatory on Human Rights at the UN
Originally from Montreal, Cindy Li is entering her third year of a dual degree in Civil Law (LL.L.) and International Development at the University of Ottawa. A graduate of Marianopolis College, where she was recognized as valedictorian of her graduating class, Cindy has distinguished herself through her leadership, community engagement, and strong commitment to human rights and social justice.
Cindy’s interest in human rights developed through her involvement in student advocacy and community initiatives. As President of the Quebec English-Speaking Student Associations Coalition (QESSAC) from 2022 to 2024, she led and supported initiatives representing more than 25,000 students during the adoption of Bill 14 in Quebec. This experience reinforced her understanding of the importance of collaboration, perseverance, and collective action in advancing meaningful social change.
Alongside her community involvement, Cindy is currently completing a legal internship with Lex Group Inc., where she contributes to class action proceedings and complex civil litigation matters.
She was also a member of the University of Ottawa’s international delegation for the 2026 Charles-Rousseau International Moot Court Competition in Public International Law. There, she received the award for 4th Best Oralist among a cohort of more than 160 participants representing universities from around the world.
As a member of a visible and cultural minority, Cindy hopes to contribute to human rights discussions through a perspective grounded in empathy, active listening, and the amplification of voices that are too often marginalized. For her, the Observatory represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen her research and critical thinking skills while collaborating with peers and mentors dedicated to social justice and the protection of fundamental rights.
Cindy is fluent in French and English and also speaks Mandarin Chinese.
