Chinsung Chung
Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Seoul National University
Chinsung Chung is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Seoul National University and holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago. She has published numerous books and papers on social movements, military sexual slavery, marriage migration in Asia, and diverse human rights issues, and has served as president of leading national academic associations in Korea, including the Korean Association of Women’s Studies, the Korean Sociological Association, and the Korean Association of Human Rights Studies. Actively engaged in advocacy on women’s rights, migrant workers, and the rights of older persons, she has also contributed to the United Nations as a Member of the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and the UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee, where she authored reports on various issues, including discrimination based on work and descent. Since 2018, she has been a Member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), where she worked as a rapporteur of many states reports, and has served as Coordinator of the Working Group on Early Warning and Urgent Action Procedures, Vice-Chairperson, Rapporteur and Follow-up Rapporteur of the Ad Hoc Conciliation Commission on Palestine and Israel.
